Above Timberline

the wind carries a prayer-on the
breath of a blooming mountain willow,
the rush of a river bed, below the
beat of a hoof.

And in the creak of a saddle,
There I am.

On a crisp morning with
coffee steam rising
and the chatter of a magpie,
the crackle of campfire,

There I am.

For a memory may be no more tangible than
wrapping your arms around love
But no less real.

It is the end of the day-the sun
finally rests behind the
peaks of a mountain valley.
There I am.

From Shakespeare

And what love can do, that dares love attempt."

From Twain

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

Twain, 1939

From "Moonshine Murder"

Okay, I've decided I need to post a little something from my current project, a young adult Historical Fiction novel, "Moonshine Murder". This comes from the end of chapter 14:

"The breeze wrestled the leaves on the Cottonwood. Above the branches, scattered clouds cast opaque shades in the sky. The wind danced. The deep blue of twilight descended into the stirred waters of the horizon."

From Flannery O'Connor

"The writer is only free when he can tell the reader to go jump in the lake....You want, of course, to get what you have to show across to him, but whether he likes it or not is no concern of the writer."
